The Ninth Island label has long been a reliable source of dark-coloured, cherry-rich, good value Tassie pinot. The latest vintage has a little less obvious red fruit and more spicy complexity – and it is better for it.

This is good. It's firm, focussed and well ripened and its sour-sweet flavours walk an attractive line between savouriness and outright fruitiness. Tannin control is exemplary, and it drinks well all the way to the bottom of the bottle. This is my pick of the affordable pinot noirs at the moment.
