The name ‘Stump Jump’ doesn’t relate to the English game of cricket (jumping over the stumps at the end of the game), nor the breeding of livestock held in the stumps but relates to the significant South Australian invention – the Stump Jump plough. The plough soon became a worldwide implement for ploughing fields because of its ability to ride over stumps and gnarled “mallee” Eucalypt roots and snags, saving valuable time and resources by not stopping the draught horse.
A lovely bright red in appearance with a lovely aromatic nose of ripe juicy red fruits, dominated with cranberries and loganberries, spice, cardamom, green pepper and an earthy herbal note coming through. The palate is fruity, rich and ripe and loaded with mulberries, plums, white chocolate and spices which are balanced with ripe tannins. The finish is lovely and soft with a surprising length of flavour balanced with savoury edges and lively acidity. This is GSM, d’Arenberg style, through and through. Drink now or cellar over the next 3 to 5 years.
Vintage 2006 was one of the most condensed vintages experienced here at d’Arenberg and one of our best ever. After a dry winter we experienced heavy rains in spring. Flowering and veraison were consistent and occurred with almost no interruptions. Once veraison was complete, ripening occurred very quickly and consistently, even when the initial start to summer was mixed with varied temperatures and intermitted rains. This mild, early summer slowed the overall vegetative growth of the canopies and being cooler than normal produced fruit that was very fragrant, with good acidity and long length. Eventually warmer conditions did prevail which was ideal for late ripening varieties enhancing their fragrance and producing wonderful levels of natural acidity and intensity of flavour.
This wine is the combination of many individual parcels of wines that flowed down from the many senior wines in our stable including parcels from a range of new growers. Our red winemaking is very traditional and simplistic. All of our reds are fermented in traditional headed-down open fermenters prior to being pressed in our traditional basket-presses, and then matured prior to bottling.
